Ladakh is another name for a high altitude desert, dramatic landscapes and a vibrant Buddhist culture that makes everyone spellbound. Furthermore, Ladakh is a top-visited destination for mountain-biking enthusiasts and a treasury of vibrant cultural heritage.
While many suggest a week or more time to explore this high-altitude mountain region, it is possible to get a taste of its magic in a concentrated 3-day trip. However, it is very crucial to acknowledge the challenges, primarily the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Therefore, acclimatisation is not a suggestion but a necessity before starting this trip.
Best time to visit Ladakh
June to September for pleasant weather & clear skies, which is ideal for outdoor activities like camping and hiking.
This itinerary prioritises health & ensuring iconic sights experiences.
Important note on Acclimatisation:
Leh, the capital town, is at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft above sea level. So it is very important to 1st settle down & to adjust to low oxygen levels. Therefore, 1st day in the itinerary will mainly focus on acclimatisation.
Let’s begin the journey.
Day 1
Journey begins with a breathtaking Mountain View from the flight into Leh’s Kushal Bakula Rimpochee Airport.
As you descend, the rugged snow-capped peaks & barren terrain will offer a preview of the adventure.
Upon arrival, move towards the hotel & take it easy. Don’t overexert yourself on the instant. Drink plenty of water & have a lighter meal. 1st goal is to allow your body to adjust to the low oxygen levels.
Later afternoon, as you start to feel better, head towards the Royal Leh Palace, a 17th-century palace built very uniquely using wood & sand, which is near the Leh Market, which has a majestic view from the top.
Shanti stupa: near the palace, visit the Shanti stupa in Leh. It is a Buddhist white domed stupa on a hilltop in Chanspa. It should be noted that this place holds relics of the Buddha at its base, enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama.
In the evening, as we head towards the Leh market, we will find that the market is a bustling hub of activity with traditional handicrafts, delicious local food & souvenirs. One of the must-try items is Sea buckthorn juice, a regional speciality which is known for its high vitamin C content, which is an aid in acclimatisation.

Have a lighter meal at night as dinner & sleep early for the next day.
Day 2
The next day, you will embark on a journey that combines spirituality and serenity with natural wonders, visiting unique sites.
1st, head towards the Hall of Fame, a unique museum maintained by our Indian Army that honours the brave soldiers who served in this region.
Next visit is to legendary Magnetic Hill, a small stretch of road that creates an optical illusion – it appears that a vehicle with its engine turned off rolls uphill. It is indeed a quirky stop for a photogenic view.
Nearby, visit Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a beautiful Sikh temple with a fascinating legend.
In the afternoon, continue the journey towards the Sangam, the confluence of the Indus & Zanskar rivers. Both river have their distinct colours creating a mesmerising meeting point. The Indus is calm, deep blue, while the Zanskar is often a muddy green or brown, depending upon the season. This is a popular spot for photography.
Later afternoon, while returning to Leh, the two most significant monasteries are – Thiksey, which is often called “Mini Potala Palace” & another one is Shey Palace – a former summer palace for the Ladakh kings, which is known for its massive Shakyamuni Buddha statue.
Day 3
This is the place that people mainly visit in Ladakh — the Turquoise Jewel of Ladakh, Pangong Lake.
The route for Pangong Lake is through the challenging Chagla pass, one of the highest motorable passes in the world. Approx 5-6 hours of driving from Leh through the panoramic views of rugged mountains & the valley, then finally arrive at the breathtaking taking serene beauty of the famous picturesque Pangong Lake. The high altitude lake is famous for its stunning shades of blue, which continuously change throughout the day. It is also a famous film shooting spot. While driving, you will also experience magnificent panoramic views of the rugged mountains and the valley.
The Pangong Lake is partially in India & partially in China. The Indian side of the lake stretches several kilometres and is surrounded by serene beauty & clear mountain air.
